Women Development Fund (WODEF) Initiates a Training Program “Rebuilding Rural Household Livelihoods through Sustainable Climate Smart Agriculture”

In June 1, 2023, Women Development Fund (WODEF), a Community women-led organization based in Kisii County officially launched a life skills promotion training program in Nyaribari Chache Sub-County, to empower vulnerable women and girls out of school to engage in climate smart agriculture and climate adaptation livelihood activities to improve household nutrition and reduce incidences of poverty in rural areas.  

The training program aims to rebuild rural household livelihoods and improve nutrition status of women and children living in abject poverty. 

WODEF is committed to empowering women and girls which is critical to the sustainable development of any society. 

Women and girls play an essential role in agriculture, which is the backbone of many rural economies.

According to the Chief Executive Officer Hellen Oyugi, despite the larger percentage of about 80% contributed by the rural women in agricultural sector, women often face numerous challenges that limit their participation and contribution to this sector. 

Rebuilding Rural Household Livelihoods and nutrition through Climate-Smart Agriculture is a crucial step towards empowering women and girls and achieving sustainable development. She also added that Climate-Smart Agriculture is a holistic approach that addresses the challenges of food security and climate change. 

"Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices focus on sustainable land management enhancing soil health, and increasing agricultural productivity in a manner that is resilient to climate change, “said CEO Hellen Oyugi. 

She further explained that CSA practices will promote resource-use efficiency, conservation of natural resources and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in Kisii and other parts of the country. 

Climate-Smart Agriculture can, therefore, contribute to building the resilience of rural households to climate change and improving the Livelihoods and nutrition of women and girls. 

Board Chairperson Zipporah Aming'a stated that empowering women and girls through CSA can be achieved through various approaches. 

She mentioned that it is crucial to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in agricultural policies and programs. 

"This can be achieved by ensuring that women voices and perspectives are fully integrated into agricultural planning and decision-making processes," said Board Chair. 

Furthermore, Zipporah said they are going to increase women's access to productive resources such as land, credit, and inputs such as seeds and fertilizers. 

WODEF is committed to strengthening practices through training and extension services. 

Board Chair added that the CSA practice is shall engage and support women to do value addition activities and have access to local markets. 

Women Development Fund put more efforts on Climate-Smart Agricultural training to eradicate challenges facing women and girls in rural areas because they face a host of challenges that limit their participation in development of their communities, hence making achievement of gender equality a challenge. 

Also, the CSA is remedy to fight for climate change effects such as famine, drought and food insecurity.
